| "Hippopotamus" means "river horse" in ancient Greek, but the hippo is not related to horses. It is more related to the pig. But actually is it related to the whales. The latest research about both animals DNA proofs that. |
| There are two varieties of hippos. The small pygmy hippo, which lives in rain forests and swamps, and the gigantic common hippo, that lives mostly in grasslands around rivers and lakes. Hippos gather in herds of 10 to 15 members, but can often see up to 100 animals together. That doesn't mean that they belong together, just that they share the same lake. A male always leads the herd's females and babies. Pygme hippos goes two or three together, never in herds. |

Hippos are only found in Africa. The common hippo
lives in west, south, east and central parts. The
pygmy hippo only lives in western parts of Africa,
like Liberia. Here's a map over Africa. The red parts
is where the common hippo lives. The blue parts is
where the pygmy hippo lives. (On the purple part,
both common and pygmy hippos are living.)
The pygmy Hippo is now extinct after being hunted
by man. |
