SEX, INEQUALITY AND RUTHLESSNESS

Published in Sydsvenska Dagbladet, Jan 4 1999 and in Tertulia, Jan 16 1999

Answer to Tage Sandmark ("Sex, social democrats and inequality by the law"), dec 28.
Prostitutes live terrible lives. Earlier this year an international study was published which shows that most prostitutes suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is characterised by chronic emotional numbness, sleeping problems, flashbacks etc. According to a scale developed by the American military to measure PTSD in troups which have been shot at in combat, prostitutes were even more severely afflicted than Vietnam veterans.

What "equality" can there be between a man who pays to use and debase a woman, and a woman on the bottom of society who suffers this treatment to finance her own drug addiction or because her pimp forces her? But if it shall be illegal to buy sex then it should be illegal to sell it, otherwise it's not equal, argues Tage Sandmark, as if the power relation between sex buyers and sellers were symmetrical. Myself I am of the opinion that prostitutes need our support and compassion, not to be branded as criminals.

Sandmark goes on in an even worse way: "sexuality is the burning torch which cannot be steered by the inside of humans. The sex drive is stronger than the part of personality which controls and censors." I'd just like to say that I certainly am able to steer my sexuality! The sexuality is possible to influence with the will as well as with the culture. For example many teenage boys now think that one "should" have anal sex - something they've "learned" by watching porn. Girls tell about how they feel like dolls when their boyfriends turn them from side to side without any tenderness in order to try all the positions, and the youth clinics report of a strong increase of the number of cases where young women have had their anus destroyed by anal sexual intercourse.

For sure we can together influence the way in which sexuality is formed and thereby acted out; men and women have the capacity to be sexual in a considerate way. Talk about humans individually or collectively being unable to steer sexuality just obscures men's responsibility for the many violations which are committed.
