Falsterbo is Sweden's oldest lighthouse building, dating back to 1793.
Along with Kullen, ligthts or coalflames have been burning here since the 13th
century. The famous astronomer Tycho Brae was in 1577 the lightkeeper of both
Falsterbo and Kullen. He received several complaints from King Fredrik of
Denmark for mismanaging the "flame". Coal was very expensive, and Tycho Brae
prefered to spend his money on building an observatory on the island Ven.
Falsterbo is no longer of navigational importance,
but is kept as a museum-light by Vellinge
City Council.
