Can it be a hedgehog mother searching for the place to make a nest for her and small
hoglets which are going to come soon?
If the place is good, hedgehog mother will come back to prepare the nest there next year
as well. Even if it is in the middle of the garage floor. But well, this time she was not so
lucky.....Family owning a garage has started to renovate the floor, took away all the wooden pieces
and to their surprise they have found few small hoglets laying there!!! Panic, what to do????
I adviced them to:
- Do not touch the hoglets!!!
- Prepare a new house for them, just a wooden box, with the roof and the entrance, large enough
for only a hedgehog mother to come in
- Very, very carefully placing the spade under the nest with hoglets and transferring
them to the new home
- Placing the box in the spot where the hedgehog mother has been seen often in the garden
but not too far away from the place where the nest has been found (if possible)
- Placing some food to attract the mother to come (cat food will do)
In this case the mother found the hoglets in the new nest
with no problem, was feeding them and everything
has ended happily. It is also very important that during such operation hoglets will be
kept warm, cover them by dry grass, if their mother has not done it herself.
