This is a sad story. I was given this hoglet in August (2000) by a person who
found him and kept for few days (the hoglet was so qute...). She claimed that
the hoglet had a broken leg. She was
going for holidays so who will take care of him? Well, it was me....When I saw this
hoglet for a first time, I felt something was wrong. He was just laying on his side
and did not move much. Around him lots of food was laying. But that was not what he needed...
He needed a veterinary help which was not given. After careful examining of a hoglet it
was obvious that he had a deep wound, like a large piece of his skin was peeled of
at his back. Flies have already been there and the magots were living in the wound.
Hoglet was rather small, around 130 grams and should still be with his mother.
The veterinary described his state as critical and low survival chances.
The hoglet did not make it.
I love hedgehogs, but I am not a veterinary, even though I am a biologist, I need
to seek the help of a professional in such cases. I wish people would feel
more responsibility for wounded wilde animals and helped them not only by giving them
food.
