Hedgehogs actually have quite a long tongue. They can use it for eating as well, as for licking/cleaning their fur of course. The hedgehog I saw, just turn up his tummy, in the middle of the grass field and was making and evening cleaning! He would have not much chances in my opinion in case of sudden attack....
