Garden location:
25 km from Umea center, northern Sweden
Garden size:
around 1800 m2
Garden type:
Village garden around free standing house in a countryside of northern Sweden. Creation of this
garden has started in May 2003 with rather large scale "ground works".
Soil type:
Clay in most of the place. What is for both, good and bad. Clay is rather nutritious and moisture
keeping soil. However, it is hard to cultivate when wet, lets little oxygen in and it keeps the water during winter, what
is not good for roots. Clay can be made easier soil by adding not too fine corn sand and mixing
it together as well as a constant addition of the ready compost material. I had to digg lots of
draining ditches to allow the water to flow away from flower beds. Each flower bad is increased in
height by adding a 30-40 cm layer of sand and black soil. This way water will easier flow away.
