Lilies in the nordic garden

Northern border of natural habitats for lilies is Kamtchatka and middle Siberia (L. dauricum and L. pumilum). Quite frost resistant are lilies from Asiatic group, since they originate mainly from frosty Siberian areas.Trumpet and oriental lilies are more sensitive for long, frosty winters and therefore their bulbs need to be protected with an extra layer of leafs and branches. I have tried so far (with success) lilies from Asiatic group, with exception to Lilium martagon.

Place in the garden:

  • sunny
  • well drained (clay soil may be problematic)
  • well fertilized
  • with snow cover in the winter
  • Lilies like to have their "feet" in the shadow

Some general info about lilies in nordic gardens can be found in the book:
Din Trädgård - Karin Berglund. Albert Bonniers Förlag 1996.ISBN 91-0-056929-1.
