Arcade Classic

The Story

One night in the beginning of 1996 while doing the laundry (!!) I got the idea to program a simple racing game. In the late 70's I really enjoyed the b/w arcade and I wanted to review these old memories again. And i guess that the best way to do this was to program the game myself. In the end of 1996 I sold this game to the 64'er Magazine and it was released in issue 10/96.

I wanted the game to look as much as the original as possible. I also wanted to use as much of the screen as possible, so the upper and lower border is removed. A few basic utilities was also programed (to rotate the car-sprites and other things.) While testing my joystick routines I played alot with different parameters. I could not descide what setup of parameters to use, so I built in an menu with lots of options for the player to change. As your skill develops you can use an faster and more accurate setup of your car to reach the highscore in the hall of fame.

Playing Arcade Classic

I guess that the options in the menu is quite obvious. But note that player 1 uses joystick in port 2, and player 2 uses joystick in port 1. The game consists of eight different tracks. In practice mode you are able to choose which track to practice. When compeating you'll drive through all eight track. Your score is based upon how much time is remaining when you finish each track.
Also watch out for the oil on the track. And if you bump into your competitor your car will go bezerk across the track. Happy Driving!!

The compleate game can be found at the download page.
