Grímas AoA

Vi kunde inte motstå det i Scriptoriet, det var jag som höll i penseln, men idén var allas. Till detta event fick vi ett antal uppdrag, bland annat skulle vi göra scrollor till Baranor och Gríma. Som alla goda SCAiter har de flesta i Aros Scriptorium ganska god kunskap i Tolkiens böcker. Själv är jag sämst på det, men är i stället en besserwisser av mått och gift med en härold. När jag reagerade på att Baranor inte riktigt lät medeltida, kunde andra berätta för mig att Baranor ursprungligen var en Tolkienfigur. (Jag litar fortfarande på det.) Vi gav Baranor en drake, och sedan kom vi till Gríma...

Gríma's AoA

We couldn't resist this in the Scriptorium, I held the brush, but the idea came from all of us. We had a lot of scrolls to do for this event, among others we were supposed to make AoAs for Baranor and Gríma. As all good SCAdians, most of the members of Aros Scriptorium has knowledge in and about the writings of Tolkien. Myself, I'm not good on the subject, but I'm a know-it-all and married to a herald. When I said that Baranor didn't sound medieval, others could tell me that Baranor originally is a Tolkien figure. (I still trust them.) We gave Baranor a dragon, and then we came to Gríma...

Detta ska föreställa Gríma själv. Mottagaren var kvinnlig, och vi var inte säkra på hur väl hon visste att Grima Ormstunga var en av de mer slemma skurkarna i Ringentrilogin. Detta var året innan Peter Jacksons stora film gick upp på biograferna världen över. Jag har därför ansträngt mig mycket för att detta ska bli en scrolla som är fin och rolig att få (även om jag också packade den så full med Tolkienreferenser som jag bara kunde).

Gríma dyker här upp som en from läs- och skrivkunnig dam framför en pulpet. Detta är den bild som är mest 1300talsgotik, den stil som jag gillar mest, och som scrollan är utförd i. Precis som i medeltida illuminationer har jag tippat bokytan i strid mot normalt perspektiv för att visa upp bokytan (jag kunde dock ha tagit i ännu mer). Jag blev ganska nöjd med vitverket i bokstaven, jag får aldrig till det annars.

This is Gríma herself. The recipient was female, and we weren't sure about if she knew that Grima Wormtongue was one of the more creepy crooks in the Trilogy. This was the year before the Lord of the Rings went up on the theaters. I've put much effort into making this a goodlooking scroll anyone would be happy to recieve (even though I packed it with referencies to Tolkien).

Gríma is portrayed as a pious litterate lady in front of a desk. This is the picture that is most 14th century gothic, the style that I like most, and the style I chose for this scroll. Just like medieval illuminators I've tilted the top of the desk in an angle not known in normal perspective, just to show the pages of the book (I could have overdone it more). This is one of the few times I made white work that I'm satisfied with.

Attribut och symboler var väldigt viktiga i den medeltida bildvärlden. Alla heliga och litterära personer har åtminstone en grej de släpar runt på för att visa vilka de är. Ibland kan det vara en färg som alltid återkommer i kläderna. Jungfru Maria avbildas till exempel fortfarande med blå mantel. Jag använder detta symboltänkande när de scrollor jag gör tillåter det.

Detta är Gollum, en för honom väldigt smickrande avporträttering. Jag kunde inte gå hur långt som helst i Tolkienering utan att göra våld på 1300talsstilen. Hans attribut fick här vara ringen, den kala skallen, den grönaktiga hyn och kärleken till ringen (han kysser den). För att inte göra refererandet för uppenbart lät jag honom bära ringen som en rockring kring kroppen. Ringen återkommer också i mönstret i bakgrunden.

Attributes and symbols were important in the medieval pictorial thinking. Every holy and literary person had at least one thing they carried around to show who they were (in pictures at least). Sometimes it's a colour on the clothes. Virgin Mary is still portrayed with blue cloak, for example. When I make scrolls fit for it, I use this pictorial thinking.

This is Gollum, a flattering portrait for him. I couldn't go to far in my Tolkifiation without doing harm to the 14th century style. His attributes in this case is the ring, the bald head, the greenish skin and the love for the ring (he kisses it). To mask the reference a bit I made him carry the ring around the body like a hula hoop. The ring does also appear in the background pattern.

Rohan har ett grönt baner med en vit galopperande häst på. Här har vi en vit häst mot grön bakgrund. Jag har inte lagt till några fler symboliska referenser till Tolkien i den här bilden, jag tyckte inte det behövdes. I medeltida bilder kan en vetekärve dyka upp som symbol för fruktsamhet och rikedom. På den här bilden har jag låtit hästen ha ett stort knippe havre i famnen (det är ju en häst). Jag vet inte om symboliken skulle ha gått fram ändå hos en medeltida person, men tanken är att det ska vara en lyckönskan till Gríma.

The banner of Rohan is a white galopping horse on a green background. This is a white horse on green background. I didn't put more Tolkienistic symbols in this one, I didn't find it necessary. A wheat sheaf is sometimes the symbol of fruitfulness and fortune. In this picture I placed a sheaf of oats in the 'arms' of the horse (it's a horse). I don't know if a medieval person still would have got it, but it is meant to be a well wishing for Gríma.

Här har vi återigen ett smickrande porträtt av en slemmig karaktär. En Grímascrolla utan Grima Ormstunga själv vore tråkig. Ormstungas symbol är i det här fallet huggormen som slingrar kring hans högra hand. Han ser dock mer manlig och stridbar ut än han borde, och det är mitt dåliga Tolkienkunnandes fel. Här fick också tanken om att scrollan skulle vara snygg att se på gå före en porträttlik avbildning. Även i medeltida bilder kan slemma karaktärer vara bildsköna, och istället avslöjas av sina attribut, så jag är i alla fall inte ensam.

Again a flattering portrait of a creepy character. A Grímascroll without Grima Wormtongue would be boring. The symbol of Wormtongue is in this case the adder slithering around his right arm. He do look more manly than he should, and that's because of my bad Tolkien knowledge. Above that the thought that the scroll should be nice to recieve was more important than close likeness to the character. At least I'm not alone, in medieval pictures creepy characters could look good, but be revealed by their attributes.

Scrollan gjordes på slätt akvarellpapper med designergouache. Guldet lades med 22 karats transportguld i flera lager på modernt vattenbaserat guldklister. (Ja, jag fuskar med guldgrunden - jag kommer inte alls överens med gesso, och har för lite tålamod med gummi ammoniacum.)

The scroll is made on flat aqvarell paper with designer gouache. The gold is 22 carat transfer gold, laid in several layers on modern waterbased goldglue. (Yes, I cheat with the gold base - I can't handle gesso at all, and am too impatient to work with gum ammoniacum.)
