Hopkins Marine Station and Monterey Bay Aquarium

On a tuna research cruise in Mexican waters together with scientists from Hopkins Marine Station

In October 1997 I went to Monterey in California to join Dr. Barbara Block at Hopkins Marine Station, Stanford University, on a research cruise tagging and tracking bluefin and yellowfin tuna. The project was conducted in association with the Monterey Bay Aquarium at the Tuna Research Conservation Centre located right next to the aquarium. The entrance to the Hopkins Marine Station The cruise took off from Moss Landing and the ship we were on was the Point Sur- a 120 ft long vessel. Scientific leader onboard the ship was professor Barbara Block. Together with Heidi Dewar, post doc, and PhD students Dave Marcinek and Ellen Freund they were out to get data for their research. To assist in the tracking were four volunteers. Besides myself there were Dave Lindquist (with Swedish ancestors!!!), Dan Dau and Simon Fletcher. The research vessel Point Sur
At the beginning of the trip I managed to gather most of them at the bow for a picture.Part of the people on the cruise
Dave Marcinek wasn't in it as he was watching the tracking system and Barb I only managed to get right after she had scanned a tuna at the lab (leftmost). On that picture is also Chuck Farwell (rightmost) who works for the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Barb, me, Heidi and Chuck in the tuna pen

Dave Lindquist actually came from Moss Landing Lab where he is conducting his Master´s thesis on rock fish. Latest news is that he has handed in his thesis ans is now waiting for the killing remarks. Good luck Dave! After the cruise I stayed with Dave and his lovely wife Jennie. I owe them for that and hope they will give me the opportunity to pay back their hospitality one day when the will visit Sweden.
