Atterbom and E.J.
Stagnelius are ideal types of Swedish romanticism. Three different
attitudes towards life are discussed, allegro,
adagio and Weltschmerz,
the latter of which is the most prevalent among Swedish romanticists. The
romanticists generally have a negative attitude to life. This implies the
use of dismal concepts such as the mythical apostasy, referred to in the
writings of
Plato and others. Atterbom
forms a more optimistic view in pivotal areas such as beauty/aesthetics,
nature and love, than Stagnelius
does. Atterbom
applies the optimistic Pantheism, whereas Stagnelius
makes use of the pessimistic Gnosticism in interpreting the world. They
also claim two opposite forms of escape from the feeling of Weltschmerz.
Stagnelius escapes into the ideal world of his own fantasy, whereas Atterbom
transmutes his feeling of agony into worldly activities. Their attitudes
towards life are fundamental to their formation of a consistent Weltanschauung.
