T-55M
The first Finnish T-55īs arrived from Soviet Union in 1960. They were virtually
unchanged up until the late 80īs when 70 T-55īs went thru a modernization. They
were then designated T-55M. The most important change was that a fire-control
computer from swedish Bofors was installed. This computer is far more advanced
than those found in T-72M1 and made T-55M considerable more effective in terms
of firepower and accuracy. More effective belgian ammunition was also introduced.
Training of tank crews to T-55M has ended and some of the T-55Mīs will be scrapped
or end up at museums due to that the storage space is needed for the new Leopard
2A4īs. But those remaining will be stored for reserve use. Its main role in the
case of war would be infantry support and to form second line independent tank units.
