I had the opportunity to work as the Explosive Detecting Dogs/EDD Quality Assurance Officer for the UNMIK Mine Action Coordination Center in Kosovo. My work in Kosovo was to set up an accreditation test field for all incoming teams using mine detection dogs and also do the continuously following up. The teams were not allowed to work within Kosovo if they didn’t pass the UN accreditation.
All organizations without restrictions had to pass the UN accreditation in all of their demining branches; manual demining, mechanical demining, mine awareness, survey, etc.
I think I was very priviliged to hold this position, especially when it comes to my superior bosses. I’ve participated in different kind of dog missions in different countries and this was the first time there were an understanding in how to use the dogs, dog related problems and how to make it better! Especially thanks to Programme Manager John Flanagan and Chief of Operations Chris Clarke.
