Blood In Blood Out is a realistic film portraying the life of three cousins in East Los Angeles, USA. The movie is almost 3 hours long. Director Taylor Hackford received the "Best Film Award" at 1993's Tokyo Movie Festival. Lots of the scenes were filmed in the San Quentin prison. About 350 prisoners participated in the movie. The security in the 140 years old prison was very hard. None of the filmcrew was allowed to have a previous record or beeing on probation. None of them was allowed to wear any blue clothes like the over 5000 prisoners wear. Freddy Negrete, a world-famous tatoo designer (who has been 3 years in prison himself) was hired to design the tatooes. The movie was actually released as Bound By Honor, since the name "Blood In Blood Out" was considered inappropriate by the the distributors, Buena Vista International.
