The Elings-family in Orsa, Sweden
I've been searching for my roots in the old churchbooks of the community Orsa in Sweden. The oldest relative I could find in the books was Elings Malin born in 1602. By that time and until around 1950 people were named by the family name before the first name, in this area. Their firstname were followed by patronymikon, at least until around 1930. Patronymikon is the fathers name followed by son or daugther(dotter in Swedish). Elings Jon's daughter Brita, had the name Elings Brita Jonsdotter. The Elings-family from Orsa were mostly farmers or soldiers. Elings Per Jönsson from Kallmora in Orsa, born 1662, was an exception. He was known as lerned man and a good christian. For example he was a juryman for many years. Another exception was the man, for me unknown, that The Priest of Orsa wrote about in the newspaper "Orsa Skoltidning, nr2, 1938". He wrote that the mayor of Berlin was related to the Elings-family. The mayor wrote him a letter to get a birhtcertificate. I haven't found any information about him in my researches, yet. Today, in january 1997, there is 19 persons with the surname Elings from this Elings-family, in Sweden.

The "Elings-Pers"-family are related to the Elings-family from Orsa in Sweden. They changed their family-name as a memory of their grandfather "Elings Per". Today, in january 1997, there is 6 persons with the surname Elings-Pers in Sweden.

The Elings-family from Holland, living in Sweden
In 1956 Peter was imigrating from Arnhem in Holland to Stockholm in Sweden. He changed his name from Elingsdebor (it may not be correctly spelled) to Elings. He got four kids. Peter is dead, bud two of his daugthers and one grandchild is still living in Sweden with the surname Elings. They have done researches to find their halfbrother,adopted in Holland, without result. Today, in january 1997, there is 4 persons with the surname Elings from this family, in Sweden.

Eling outside Southampton in England
This village, "the home of Edla's people", is 900 years old. It was the "De Eling"-family who founded this village. The family were dying out when the last son died and the village was divided by the three surviving sisters. I visited this village in 1988 and was told by the librarian at the Totton & Eling library, that there still is an old gravestone from one of De Eling-persons in St. Mary's Church in Eling. 1443 the name of this commynity was Eline. In 1612 it was Elingz and between 1685 to 1874 it was named Elings. Nearby there is a small village named Elingstorp.
