STATEMENT IN SUPPORT OF BANGLADESHIEN WRITER TASLIMA NASRI
Taslima Nasrin is a writer, now in great danger, because of her work on womens rights. She was forced to live in exile from 1994-98. She has now returned to Bangladesh to be with her mother who is suffering from cancer in terminal stage. After two days with her family she was focred to go underground. Taslima Nasrins life is now threatened. The government of Bangladesh has issued a decree for her arrest and the mullas of Bangladesh have sentenced her to death through their fatwa. Taslima Nasrin sent a letter to comrades outside Bangladesh where she appeals for support in this severe situation. And we urge the government of Bangladesh to stope hunting Taslima Nasrin and let her free, to leave the country in safety.
What has Taslima Nasrin done? She has put focus on womens issues through her writing. She is the voice of common women, the voice of women in the field, in the factory, in the home, women in slavery. She has spoken against the systematic oppression of women, which is maintained by religious laws, discriminatory laws, traditions and values from the Middleages. This is why Taslima Nasrin is sentenced to death by the mullas and wanted by the government. There are rumours that Taslima Nasrin has said that she is sorry and that she no longer stands for what she has written. Taslima Nasrin in her letter says, that she has done nothing wrong, and that there is nothing to be sorry of.
We demand that Taslima Nasrin gets her democratic rights to live and work, to be with her family, to think and speak openly and travel freely. We damand, let Taslima Nasrin free immediatly International Liasion Committee for a workers International (ILC) in Sweden Shora-ye- kar (Labour Council) - Iran Thiss statement will be spread to labour organisations all over the world Contact: Sara Taheri Fax: +46-8-7600343 E-mail: commun@hem2.passagen.se |
