NexSort is a utility that sorts files and folders on a Fat16 drive in alphabetical order. The main useage for this program is with the Nex II mp3-player by frontier labs. This mp3-player reads the music files from an ordinary Compact Flash or Mircodrive formatted in FAT16. As it displays the files in the order they have been copied to the medium, this program can be used to make Nex II show them in alphabetical order.
NexSort is discontinued. Check out the replacement: FATSort or PlaylistExpander.
Updated: 2003-10-05: Since there are still people using Win9x, NexSort is re-released as a classic version.
This version will not be supported by me in any way. This means that I will not correct any of the bugs in
this software. For those of you who use Windows 2000/windows Xp, I really recommend FATSort instead.

FATSort has got an own homepage here.

As I wrote below - NexSort development has been canceled. Its successor is called FATSort.
FATSort will not use the operating systems file operations to reorder the files. Instead it will
(as the name implies) work directly on the fat of the Compact Flash card (or any other removable
fat-16 drive). Since a program error in this program can be pretty fatal (ruining the fat,
basically ruins every thing on the disk), there will be no public beta available until I feel I
that the program is stable enough and I have implemented the functions I want. (Support for
single-directory play lists is one of these things).
This program will probably only work in Windows 2000. It probably also needs to be run as an
administrator. I will look into the requirements when the program is ready for a public release.
I have also found out more stuff on the NexSort and occasional crashes of my Nex. This is not
caused by a malfunction in NexSort. This will eventually occur if you move files/folders to your
Nex without a reformat now and then. NexSort nearly speeded the process up a bit. I have contacted
Frontier Labs about this, and await an answer from them. Hopefully, this is something they can
replicate and not only something that depends on my system configuration/CF-brand.
If you feel you have to tell me something, don't use the yahoo forum since some people rather
discuss impedance of their headphones that read about this program (don't get me wrong here, I
have found that discussion interesting to, at least the first couple of postings). If you want to
say something, send me an email and I might consider answering.

My new pet (alias FATSort) has just taken her first stumbling steps. Congratulations FATSort!

Since I have fixed everything people so nicely have pointed out regarding NexSort, there will be no
further active development of NexSort.

Public beta 0.9.5 is released. NexSort should now work on windows 9x as well as on Windows 2000.

New public beta is released. See included history-file for changes. Cancel still doesn't work. Win98 is
still uncertain since no one gives me feedback. Post feedback at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nexiimp3/.

Fixed (not verified) some problems with the expire-date, making NexSort impossible to start in countries
with "wrong" date-format.

A new public beta is released. Sorting should work now. Although, the sorting may seem strange, this
release is mainly for evaluation of the sorting algorithm, not the sorting order. Also note that the
cancel-button doesn't work at the moment. Also, I have had kind of a bad day today - you use this utility
at your own risk :)
Have been told it doesn't work on windows 98. I will look into this later.

After a complete rewrite of the sorting core and some different algorithms, I might have got it working :).
At least it didn't crash on my excessive (2) test runs. I haven't completely finished it (hope those
needed changes doesn't screw the whole thing up again). If it still works tomorrow, all I have to do is
to implement functions to show statistics and make it possible (if possible) to cancel a sort operation
(seems overkill to have it multithreaded if it doesn't respond when it's busy :)

Ok, I got my Nex back, great support Advanced Mp3 Players! I have also been able to verify that the
sorting-algorithm still makes my Nex crash on subfolders. I will look into this and fix it as soon as
possible (I'm waiting for some documentation on Fat16).

First official beta of NexSort is released. After some late bug-fixes, it should work on
Windows 98 as well. It is still unsure if it works as expected, since I have given my Nex II the
flash of death. Before this, I had some problems with my crashing upon entering subfolders. I blame
1.42 for this, and hope I can get away with it. I should receive a new Nex in a couple of days. Then I
will be able to evaluate the current sorting algorithm.

A homepage for the NexSort utility is constructed. It will temporarily (?) be placed at
http://hem.passagen.se/chsw/NexSort.html. Since there is no support for PHP, this will
be a simple HTML-page.
