The show, JAG (short for the military term Judge Advocate General), is a drama-action series about two of the lawyers in the JAG unit. They investigate crimes that have been committed in the navy. Of course their is always something that is wrong and the action begins. Every episode is a great mix of court-room drama and military action.
A big part of the show is the split loyalty the JAG lawyers face. On one hand the loyalty to the law and on the other hand the loyalty to the corps. The decision mostly comes to one of the lawyers judgment.

JAG is a real elite Navy cadre consisting of lawyers, who investigate and prosecute military crimes.

The second season has started in Sweden and the viewers weren't late to react to the change of the plot ignoring the last episode of the first season. But Mac shows great promise for the coming episodes.

The characters

[Harm]

Lt. Cmdr Harmon "Harm" Rabb Jr. (David James Elliott), the son of a decorated Navy pilot who is still missing in Vietnam. Harm himself flew planes until a bout of night blindness led to a devastating crash, killing his radio operator and leaving him feeling responsible. Cleared of all charges yet still unable to take to the air, Rabb serves his country as a member of the elite JAG corp.
Though in possession of far-ranging powers as detective, prosecutor and defence attorney, Harm, as he is known, still must face a military organisation that does not take kindly to "outsiders" investigating what they consider to be their own business. This fact, combined with his wish to honour his father's legacy, forces him to strike a delicate balance between doing what's right for the Navy and doing what's right for the common good.

[Meg]

Lt. Meg Austin (Tracy Needham) is the women that defiace the traditional thinking in the navy by her presence. Her gender provides her obstacles in her work as she constantly needs to prove her to others. But her special expertise in computers and weaponry makes her invaluable and she is a vital part of the JAG team. Additionally she is a very skilled sailor and lawyer.
She was Harm's partner from the second episode and forward. But the second season she was replaced by Mac as Harm's partner.

[Mac]

Marine Major Sarah "Mac" MacKenzie (Cathrine Bell), also a JAG lawyer, who bravely faces the challenges of her dangerous missions while dealing with traditional-thinking personnel who respond to her gender instead of her uniform.
Opposite to Harm her motto is, "Rifleman first, attorney second."
She appeared in early seasons in a minor role as Harm's personal friend. Beginning from the second season she replaced Meg as Harm's partner after a disagreement between the producers and NBC, the network broadcasting the show earlier.

Adm. A J Chegwidden (John M. Jackson), the JAG commander. On the surface another one of the diciplined commanders. But in heart he is a true soldier. As a former Navy SEAL he known how it is in the field. He puts a lot of trust in Harm and Meg/Mac.

[Krennick]

Commander Allison Krennick (Andrea Thompson), Harm's group commander in the last episodes of the first season. She is a strong commander backed-up by the fact that she is Admiral Chegwidden's protégé.
She have openly shown an interest for Harm, other then the professional.

Review

Only the first season have been broadcasted in Sweden and well, I think the first ten episodes was just superb. But the quality have dropped considerably during the second half of the first season. The Harm character have taken up more and more screen time, not leaving the Meg character much space in the show.

Fun facts

  • The swedish title for the show is the same as the swedish title for "A Few Good Men", På heder och samvete.
  • The originally NBC show is from the second season a CBS production.
  • The special effects and a lot of the sets in the series are taken from old movies.
  • The clothing, the settings and the special effects is said to costs 1.5 million per episode.
