The fastest paced show on television today. Combining the pulse of emergency and the heart of a drama this show has captured millions of people around the world. The difference between this show and other hospital dramas are that ER has managed to stay realistic during the successful attempts to entertain the audience.
The show takes place in the County General Memorial Hospital of Chicago. (In reality the show is mainly recorded elsewhere.)
A fun fact is that Michael Crichton, whom has authored several best-sellers, created the show, amongst them are Jurassic Park.

Last season ended in Sweden with the third season episode "Faith". TV 3 have now started showing reruns of the third season and very soon they will commence broadcasting new episodes.

The characters

[Mark Greene]

The doctor with the thin hair-growth, Dr. Mark Greene (Anthony Edwards) is the image of the proper and dedicated doctor. His dedication to his work has resulted in an appointment as the attending resident in the emergency rescue. But it has also had a price, his wife felt she was ignored by him and finally left him when he was forced to choose between the demands of his profession and his wife's desire to be a bigger priority in his life.
Even if he choice to work rather then to meet his wife's desire suggests that he is a ruthless career doctor not letting anything come between him and his advancement in the hierarchy, he is pictured as a nice, caring doctor always seeing to his patient's needs before his own.
He hates bureaucracy and unnecessary paper work in the hospital. Many conflicts have arisen between him and the new Dr. Weaver on the issue whether or not some of the paper work is necessary.
After Susan left he was seriously disturbed for a period. It was most obvious when he discovered Jeanie's illness. He clearly overreacted and acted without any consideration on the consequences.
The departure of Susan and his divorce together put him on the dating market. Against Dr. Ross advice he started dating several women at once.

[Douglas Ross]

A strong and recently very popular character is Dr. Douglas Ross (George Clooney). He's presence creates much turbulence in the E.R. There is always something that disturbs him in his work. Sometimes it's alcohol and mostly it's women. For periods he is completely drowned in his guilt in his failings. In those times he turns to his former girlfriend, Hathaway.
In his work he is able to hide all his failings and make miracles with his child patients as the paediatric resident. No matter how bad the situation he is able to calm the child and lit a small hope in them.
One of the best plots with him is when he met with a teenage girl called Charlie (Kirsten Dunst). The whole thing turned out to be a test of Dr. Ross' psychological strength. I hope for a continuum of this plot.

[Susan Lewis]

As the strong and talented medical resident Susan Lewis (Sherry Stringfield) successfully battles out every hopeless case, she keeps failing with having a normal, stable personal life. She bore with her the loss of her sister's baby for a long time. The loss of her constantly pressing her. And above that she is always reminded of her parents' expectations of her. With all this pressure she fights on with her work to satisfy her own ambitions.
In her work she is undoubtedly successful, making all the right decisions at the right moment. As the stable point in all the chaos she takes everyone's responsibilities on her shoulder. In even the worst situations she keeps cool.
The relationship with Dr. Greene have many times bordered to a private one. They both obviously like each other but none of them knows if the other person feels the same.

NOTE! No longer a cast member since 1996. Temporarily retired from television. Sweden is in mourning! Her last episode was broadcasted in Sweden 24 March 1997. There has circulated rumours about her reappearing in the show.

[John Carter]

The youngest of them all is the recently graduated surgical resident Dr. John Carter (Noah Wyle). Accordingly he is also the most innocent one in the staff, as he is a idealist always thinking that everyone always cooperate to reach the best solutions for the patient.
During the last year he did his time as doctor candidate in the E.R. under the supervision of Dr. Benton. Under the critical eyes of Dr. Benton he participated in the hard work in the E.R. After hard, dedicated work he managed to gain Dr. Benton's good opinion and thereby get appointed to the position of resident.

[Peter Benton]

Dr. Peter Benton (Eriq La Salle). He is the surgical resident of the E.R. His ambition to reach perfection often makes his presence an annoying element in the other doctors' daily work. A few times he has even put his own career before the good of his patient.
But in his favour can be said that he always try to be truthful and has several times proved his honesty. That can and have of course been interpreted as arrogance.
Lately though his luck has turned and most things go wrong for him.
He was Dr. Carter's supervisor during his time as intendent.

[Jeanie Boulet]

Dr. Kerry Weaver (Laura Innes). As a new resident she made life a hell in the E.R. With her she brought statistics and administration. Of course she soon realised that they couldn't do so much paper work and slowly she got accepted in the E.R. Now she is one of the centre figures.
She has grown so much that Dr. Greene is worried that she endangers his career. One of the main reasons is that Dr. Anspaugh has got a very positive opinion of her. But that seems to has changed in the last few episodes. Dr. Greene seems to have gained a advantage against Dr. Weaver.
One thing that has puzzled a few others and me is why she uses a crutch. (Laura Innes doesn't need a crotch) It has never been explained why she uses it.

[Carol Hathaway]

Cool and capable, head E.R. nurse Carol Hathaway (Julianna Margulies) easily handles the varied and numerous patients, organises the nurses and generally keeps the place running smoothly despite the chaos, but when it comes to her own life, things aren't so simple. Bouncing back from a suicide attempt (overdose), Hathaway is back in charge and struggling to get her personal life sorted out, including her conflicted feelings for Dr. Ross.
She has made an attempt to become a doctor by returning to school. How that will end we do not know at this time.

[Jeanie Boulet]

Jeanie Boulet (Gloria Reuben), Physician Assistant. A gentle doctor, seldom stepping in to the light. Mostly she is a background person keeping to herself. Her two main occasions when she was in the centre of events was when she was tested HIV positive and during the time she was girlfriend to Dr. Benton.

Dr. Abby Keaton (Glenne Headly). She was the star paediatric surgeon in the hospital. During the time Dr. Benton and Dr. Carter did their rounds in the paediatrics she was their supervisor. In many ways she is the mother to the other personnel in the hospital. She is the typical caring, kind and understanding person the others can trust and rely upon.
During her last period she had a relationship with Dr. Carter.
She was soon offered a mission to teach the Pakistanis surgery.
NOTE! Abby Keaton was a temporary character in the show.

Dr. Maggie Doyle (Jorjan Fox). A new doctor arrived in the show in 1996(US). She came in with the merger with the Southside hospital.
She is a very committed person. Everytime she sees something that she doesn't like she reacts and reacts distinctly. Of that we have seen many examples of in the show.
Very soon we discovered that she was homosexual, after Carter's attempt to date her.
