Thames Ironworks founded 1895, to give
recreation for the shipyard workers. Several
different grounds were used as the club
entered the London League (1896) and won
the championship (1898). In 1899, having
become professional, won the Southern
League Second Division (London) and moved
into Division One. On becoming a limited
liability company the name was changed to
West Ham United. Moved from the Memorial
Ground to a pitch in the Upton Park area,
known originally as 'The Castle', in 1904.
Elected to an expanded Football League
Division Two for the 1919-20 season and
never subsequently out of the top two
divisions.
