Formed 1882 as Newcastle East End on the
amalgamation of Stanley and Rosewood.
Founder members, as a professional club, of
the Northern League in 1889. Moved from
Chillington Road, Heaton, in 1892 to take over
the home of the defunct Newcastle West End,
with several of those associated with the West
End side joining the newcomers. Applied for
Football League Division One membership in
1892, failed and decided against a place in the
new Second Division, staying in the Northern
League. Later in 1892 changed name to
Newcastle United. Elected to an expanded
Football League Division Two in 1893.
