Jim (James M.) Smith
 
 
 
1940:
Born in Sheffield on October 17.
 
1959:
Signs for Sheffield United in January.
 
1961:
Joins Aldershot in July without playing a game for the Blades.
 
1965:
After scoring one goal in 74 appearances, leaves Aldershot to join
Halifax in July.
 
1968:
Moves to Lincoln in March, after making 113 League appearances
(1 as sub)  at The Shay, scoring 7 goals.
 
1968:
Makes 54 appearances for Lincoln before dropping into
non-league with Boston United, where he becomes player-manager.
 
1972:
Appointed player-manager of Colchester in November, making 8 League app.

1974:
Guides Colchester to fourth division title.
 
1975:
Quits Layer Road to join Blackburn as manager.
 
1978:
Leaves Blackburn and is appointed boss of Birmingham.
 
1979:
Birmingham are relegated from old first division.
 
1980:
Guides City back to top flight.
 
1982:
Parts company with the St Andrews club and joins Oxford as
manager.
 
1984:
Takes Oxford to old third division championship.
 
1985:
Plots Oxford's path to the top flight for the only time in their history
as they are crowned champions of the old second division. Quits the
club to become manager of QPR.
 
1986:
Takes Rangers to the League Cup final, but they lose 3-0 to
Oxford.
 
1988:
Leaves Loftus Road and is appointed boss of Newcastle.
 
1989:
The Magpies are relegated.
 
1991:
Sacked by Newcastle. Appointed manager of Portsmouth.
 
1995:
Quits Pompey and takes over at Derby.
 
1996:
Guides Derby to second place in division one behind Sunderland
and a place in the Premiership.
 
1998:
Derby ends up on a 9th place in the Premiership.
