Founded in 1905 to play at the Crystal Palace
Ground where, earlier, a Crystal Palace staff
team had successfully played. Joined the
Southern League for 1905-06 when they were
Champions of Division Two. Soon moved to
Herne Hill, then to The Nest, Selhurst. Founder
members and first champions of the Football
League Third Division 1920-21. Moved to
Selhurst Park in 1924. Founder members of
the old Fourth Division in 1958, they reached
the First Division for the first time as Second
Division runners-up in 1969. Premier League
founder members 1992. Relegated after one
season, but promoted back at the first attempt,
only to be relegated in 1994-95, winning their
place back through the play-offs at the end of
the 1996-97 season.
