A little history of:

BARNSLEY FOOTBALL CLUB

Barnsley FC
Formed in 1887 by the Rev. T.T. Preedy as
Barnsley St Peter, a reflection of the church
connection. St Peter was dropped ten years
later, a year before Barnsley were elected to
the Second Division of the Football League.
The early years were unremarkable save the
fact that the FA Cup was won in 1912, two
years after they had been beaten finalists. The
club remained in the lower reaches of the
league, dropping down to the old Fourth
Division for three seasons from 1965-68.
Division One status was achieved in 1992 and
the club completed a remarkable rise into the
Premiership at the end of 1997 as one of the
least fancied clubs for promotion. The stay in
the highest ranks, was a short one, since they
                 straight away went down again.
