New venture!!!

Custom synthesis in large lab from Advanced Chemicals

We are the marketing 'arm' of Advanced Chemicals Karlskoga AB a new bench scale lab that performs custom process R&D and contract research of advanced intermediates, active pharma ingredients and other fine chemicals, chiral products are one of the specialities in scales up to 10-20 L. The lab can act fast and flexible due to its relatively small size; 8 normal sized laboratory workstations with good ventilation plus one 6 L, one 10 L and one 20 L bench scale workstation. In house GLC, HPLC, FTIR, UV-VIS, Atomabs plus nearby access to NMR (C13 and proton) and MS. Contact us for more details (see also below).

Business Opportunities for Fine and Specialty Chemicals

Pharmaceuticals

The pharma market segment is still the dominating outlet for the Fine Chemical Industry and is estimated to amount to 25-50 BUSD totally, the figure is a matter of how one defines fine chemicals, there is a substantial market for bulk pharma substances which could be regarded as Fine or Specialty chemicals. Another factor that makes a clear definition difficult is the large captive production and products made by custom manufacture both bulk pharmas and final intermediates. See our study ‘World Top 300 Bulk pharma producers’, our study 'Key Technologies used for Pharmaceuticals' where we are reviewing over 1800 new and established pharmas for technologies used in their manufacture and our study called ‘Key 250 Pharmaceutical Intermediates’ where we are describing business opportunities in; Generic products, Mature products from the established producers, New products in development.

Agrochemicals

The agrochemical market segment is a growing outlet for the Fine Chemical Industry and is estimated to amount to 10-20 BUSD totally, the higher figure includes the value of the bulk agrochemical substances. Another factor that makes a clear definition difficult is the large captive production and products made by custom manufacture both agrochemical substances and higher intermediates. Herbicides are around 50%, insecticides 25%, fungicides 10%, other conventional pesticides 10% and biopesticides only less than 5% of the total pesticide market. See our study ‘World Top 200 Agrochemical producers’, our study 'Key Technologies used for Agrochemicals' where we are reviewing over 300 herbicides-fungicides-insecticides for technologies used in their manufacture and our study called ‘Key 200 Agrochemical Intermediates’ where we are describing business opportunities in

Generic products, Mature products from the established producers, New products presently in development. CONTENT SIMILAR TO THE PHARMA STUDIES ABOVE

Organic Pigments

Whereas the manufacturing of dyes (apart from a few strategic classes of dyes) now has shifted over to be an essentially Asian business (with China and India dominating), the organic pigment segment is still a world wide business, although with the largest growth potential in China, and is estimated to amount to 4 BUSD totally. See our study ‘World Top 100 Pigment producers’ and our study called ‘Key 100 Organic Pigment Intermediates’ where we focusing on the more important intermediates for this segment. CONTENT SIMILAR TO ABOVE.

Aroma and Fragrance products

The flavor and fragrances products consist of essences made by extraction of natural raw materials (essential oils) and of compounded products made from natural and synthetical chemical sources. The synthetically produced materials can either be produced from feed stocks made by extraction (from essential oils or wood products like turpentine oil or lignin) or from petrochemical feed stocks. The total world-wide flavor and fragrances business is between 5-10 billion USD of which well over one billion USD is for the trade of flavor and fragrances chemicals. A small number of companies in US, Western Europe and Japan account together for more than 70% of the value but Far East Asia, especially China is growing in importance. For more see our reports on 'World Top 50 Aroma Chemical Producers' and 'Key Fragrances and Aroma chemicals' (50 products profiled).

Press-release:

Advanced Fine Chemicals in kilo-lab quantities!

BG Chemicals will continue to focus on chemical information services but we are now actively involved in the foundation of a new venture dealing with production of fine chemicals, pharma intermediates and substances in lab and bench scale up to several kilos per batch. The first production facilities will be on stream this summer and will adapt to the customer demands with equipment ranging from lab scale up to 20 litres. A tight team of experienced organic synthetic chemists and process technicians will assist You with in-house GC-HPLC, UV-VIS, IR and Atom-abs and with nearby access to NMR, Mass and advanced calorimetry. The lean and tight group assures You quick and flexible service and good value for You money;

PRODUCTION OF ADVANCED FINE CHEMICALS IN LAB AND BENCH-SCALE IN KARLSKOGA

We are small and dedicated team (covering the whole area from marketing of fine chemicals, organic synthesis, analytical and process technology) behind a new venture dedicated to produce advanced fine chemicals in up to kilo quantities.

PRODUCTION FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT

We found a very suitable lab. and bench scale production facility which up until a year ago was fully used for chemical synthesis and process technology education jointly run by the University of Karlstad and the local technical high school’s chemical institution in Karlskoga. The laboratory will still be used for education purposes for part of the time during the coming year which will enable us to grow into the lab as our activities grow. The laboratory is very suitable for organic synthesis in lab and bench scale (adequate equipment in small and large lab plus some bench scale equipment is already in place in efficiently ventilated rooms) and more bench scale equipment can be installed as soon as we have project requiring that. Environmentally hazardous wastes have of course to be collected and sent away for destruction and we have the Swedish centre for hazardous wastes, SAKAB, within one hour drive. We are also equipped with the normal analytical instruments (UV-VIS, GC, HPLC, IR, Atomabs). NMR, mass and calorimetry investigations can be made in Karlskoga or the University of Karlstad (one hour drive).

TIMING

The companies activities will be run under the ‘umbrella’ of Karlskoga Technical Development Centre’ until the registration (as an AB = non-public share-holding company) is completed. The activities in lab and bench scale is expected to start in the second half of 1998. Marketing towards the pharma and advanced fine chemical fields will be made by BG Chemicals starting end of May.
