My Font My Font

My project was to make a true type font for Windows. To begin, I downloaded a freeware program called Softy.

I then designed the characters, using pencil and watercolour. My vision was some kind of catchy composition, at once artistic and tidy, suitable for birthday cards and book covers.

All was scanned and saved as bitmap image files. The software could not handle any other image format. Each character must be saved as a single bitmap file.

In the Font program, the image files were imported as templates, then the program would trace the contours and create vector based curves. This was called plotting. That is how the font can become true type.

Characters had to be adjusted this way and that, and this was very time consuming.

Every character must also be assigned a special code (the ascii code) so Windows could recognize it.

Summary.

Despite my patient efforts, the result was not quite what I had envisioned. Well it is a kind of "painted" font and it might look better in colour, with some nice matching artwork.
