BeOS, Power by Design -
Power for Design
The BeOS is designed to deliver more computing power
to users of digital media who are creating 3D models, mixing digital audio
tracks and editing the latest digital video masterpiece. To deliver the
highest possible performance, an operting system has to be designed from
the start to natively handle high-bandwidth digital media. It's not enough
to add a few features and call an operting system a media OS. The engineering
team at Be created and optimized every portion of the BeOS for handling
digital media. The BeOS is designed to be the first true Media OS
and it's here today.
High Performance
At its foundation, the BeOS is based on a concept called symmetric
multiprocessing thast lets you harness the power of one, two, four
or more processors in a single system. And the BeOS goes further by breaking
down your applications into hundreds of smaller tasks - in a process called
pervasive multithreading - that can be quickly switched in and out
as you move between applications, and can be distributed across any number
of processors. The BeOS is the only operting system that uses these concepts
throughout the system - from the kernel to applications - to deliver more
power to get your work done faster.
Media Optimized
Delivering the maximum amount of microprocessor power is only the first
step. The BeOS is optimized for dealing with high - bandwidth media - like
full color images, 3D graphics, digital audio and video. It provides a
64-bit, journaling file system, ensuring that your files and disks
can grow to terabyte size or more - enough to handle the largest digital
audio and video files. The BeOS contains a fully multithreaded graphics
system, providing fast 2D and 3D graphics capabilities. Anti-aliased
type is standard throughout the system. 3D capabilities are provided
by the industry standard OpenGL graphics library. And the BeOS provides
a modular, dynamic, multithreaded I/O system, providing high - efficiency
access to information on hard drives, CD-ROM, DVD drives and a myriad of
other devices.
Internet Native
The BeOS doesn't just work with the internet, it's designed as an Internet-native
system. Its networking capabilities are based on TCP/IP, th ebasic
language of the Internet. The BeOS provides a wealth of integrated Internet
services. Any BeOS system can act as a file server, allowing you
to share information with other users in your intranet, or the Internet
as a whole. Mail and worldwide web services are built in , as well
as web server capabilities, allowing you to publish web pages on
the network from day one. And the BeOS provides remote access capabilities
anywhere on the internet via the Telnet standard.
Processor Indipendence
A wide arrya of Intel Pentium and PowerPC (Power Macintosh compatible)
system are capable of running the BeOS. The BeOS can reside with other
operating systems on the same computer allowing you to switch between
them - to access high performance applications within the BeOS, and
your older applications from other operating systems. The BeOS goes further,
allowing you to work with MacOS, DOS and UNIX disks from within
the BeOS, printing to your existing Laserwriter printers and exchanging
infomation with users on other platforms.
And ther's muck more: Integrated Unicode Support for internationalization,
Java capabilities, Be's Replicator software technology, UNIX/Posix
capabilities and more. Adding the BeOS to your personal computer system
provides you with a new level of power. Power by - and for - design.
BassCAD & BeOS
The text above is Be's own words. The text is taken from the BeOS R3
CD-cover. My experience of BeOS is that I'm impressed by the high performance
and the internet capabilities. The thing I don't like about it is the rare
hardware support. I had to buy a new graphics adapter to make the system
work on my computer. Some day (maybe when the developing tools for BeOS
has grown better) I will write a BassCAD version for BeOS. But I doubt
that I'll get all the time I need this year. Sorry all Be-fans.
