Atari made their first computer in 1978, it was the 400 computer, later same year they made their 800 computer. Both had built in Atari BASIC, the programing langue. Manu games were made, there were three ways of loading a game into the 400 and 800 computers, the same ways as the last 8-bit computer the 130 XE, by Cassete, the cheapes alternative, but it took about 15 minutes to load a game. The second way is to use a cartridge, you didnt need any casseterecorder or siscdrive, just stick it in the top of the computer, the third way is by disc, it was the best way, but the discdrive was verry expensive. in 1982 atari made their 1200 XL, it was much like the earlier verisions of the 8-bit computers, but it had more memory. Then in 1983 Atari released their XL verisions of 600 and 800 computers. Many games were released to the XL compueter, titles like Pac-Man, Space invaders, Paperboy adn many many more. In 1985 Atari release the 800/65/130 XE the 130 xe is the most powerful 8-bit computer. Te 8-bit computers were not really bad, they could display 256 colors, and show a resolution up to 320*192 pixels, the same resolution as most of the DOS games nowdays. The XEGS was also released at 1985, it had separated keyboard and a lightgun, but as the ST also was released 1985 the 8-bit computers wasnt the best computer anymore.
