WHAT IS A FLOORBALL GOALIE?

A basic desprition of a floorball goalie follows for those new to the sport and for the curious. When describing floorball I generally compare it to street hockey. Minus the skates. There are of course other differences, a ball instead of a puck, different sticks etc but one of the most noticable differences AND similarities is the goalie. Please note the picture bellow of a floorball goalie in a basic stance. A floorball goalies basic stance is on his knees with hands raised and to the side of his head. The hand position can of course vary. I have seen everything from hands down by the legs to hands held flat under the chin. It is all a matter of personal choice. As with hockey goalies the five hole is a sensitive spot for many. Remember floorball goalies have no stick to rely on, they must keep their feet /legs together to cover up the five hole. I just touched on the main difference, the stick, or rather the lack there of. Another difference is that floorball goalies use their hands. Important comodities, as much so in the offence as in the defence. When a save had been made (or a pass back to the goalie) a mighty throw can start a swift rush and even a goal. But there are many similarities, among them are the skills involved: mobility, agility, quickness, flexebility etc. To achive these skills I recommend hockey goalie excersises and streching when you aren't practicing. This will hone your skills and keep you sharp.
